After an interview, how long should someone keep waiting?

Waiting after an interview can turn checking an inbox into a habit. A promised update date passes, then another few days, and it becomes hard to tell whether to follow up or move on. There may be ordinary delays inside the company, but applicants still need to make plans. What is a reasonable follow up message and timeline? A short, polite check seems fair, while continuing other applications protects against getting stuck on one possibility. Share wording or expectations that help keep the process manageable without pretending that silence gives a definite answer.

If a specific update date was given, refer to it briefly when following up. There is no need to apologise for asking about an agreed next step.

Keeping other applications moving can reduce the pressure around one reply. An encouraging interview still leaves practical details unresolved until there is a clear offer.

A follow up can include a simple question about the revised timeline. It gives the employer something concrete to answer without demanding an immediate decision.

If another offer has a deadline, state the actual date plainly. Clear information helps more than creating pressure with a deadline that does not exist.
