Helping someone with their phone without making them feel helpless

When somebody asks for help with a device, taking it from their hands and fixing everything can be the fastest answer. It may also leave them unable to repeat the steps next time. Explaining every technical detail can be just as overwhelming. What does patient, useful help look like? Letting the person do the tapping, writing down a few steps, and avoiding jokes about age or ability seem like a decent start. The goal should be that they understand the part they need, rather than watching someone else move quickly through unfamiliar menus.

Ask what the person is trying to do before changing settings. The visible problem is sometimes different from the task they actually need help completing.

A few clear instructions in their own words can be more useful than a long explanation. Let them try once while help is still available.
