Which local phrases helped more than a translation app?

Translation tools can help with a menu, but a small face-to-face moment sometimes needs something simpler. Asking someone to repeat a sentence slowly, explaining a dietary preference, or politely checking a platform can be harder than memorizing the word for hello. Confidence matters as much as vocabulary.

Which phrases or habits made communication easier when you were somewhere unfamiliar? Pronunciation tips are welcome if you can explain them clearly. Also interested in how people handle a misunderstanding kindly when neither person shares much language. Keep the focus on respectful, ordinary interactions rather than trying to sound perfectly fluent.
