Airport SIM, eSIM, or roaming: how do you make the choice?

Getting online abroad should be a small decision, yet it can involve coverage maps, phone compatibility, data limits, and finding out whether a plan includes a local number. The cheapest option may also require a working connection to set it up, which is an awkward surprise on arrival.

How do you compare the options before a trip? Share the questions you ask rather than only a brand name. Helpful details would include trip length, destination, whether calls mattered, and how much setup you were comfortable doing. Please avoid posting activation codes or account information.

Whether a plan supports voice calls is worth spelling out. Data access alone may not meet everyone's travel arrangements.

Coverage and compatibility should be checked for the actual destination and device. A good experience in one country is only part of the picture.
