An empty space in the calendar is still allowed to be a plan

A free evening can quickly become the place where every postponed task lands. Shopping, messages, laundry and a favour for someone else all fit into the same apparently empty slot. It can be hard to explain that available time is not always spare capacity. How do you leave some room in a week without creating another complicated system to maintain? Curious about realistic boundaries, especially for carers, parents and people with changing work hours. Different schedules make this a very different problem.

There is no need to post a full schedule. One example of a commitment that tends to expand would help keep the discussion concrete.

Saying when you can help may be easier than defending why you cannot. Does that wording make a difference in your household?

A favour can take more time than the actual task once travel and preparation are included. Does naming that whole commitment make it easier to discuss?

Households could compare the week before filling every gap. Otherwise the same evening may already be carrying several plans that nobody has mentioned yet.
