Meal planning gets complicated when the fridge belongs to four people

A meal plan can look beautifully simple until it meets a shared fridge. Shelf space is limited, cooking times overlap, and the container needed for tomorrow is still holding somebody else's leftovers. Then there are different preferences, budgets and schedules. How do shared households organise food without turning dinner into an administrative job? Labels, separate shelves and shared staples all have their trade-offs. Interested in arrangements that make the kitchen easier to use, rather than rules about what anybody should be eating.

A shared list of basics sounds useful until nobody knows who replaces them. How do households handle the boring things fairly?

Please keep replies focused on storage, planning and sharing space. People have different dietary needs, and nobody needs to justify theirs here.

Labels could explain whether leftovers are available to everyone or reserved for tomorrow. That avoids having to negotiate each container at the end of a busy day.
