Which notifications actually deserve to interrupt the evening?

A phone can carry work messages, school updates, delivery alerts and family conversations in the same small stream of noise. Turning everything off may be impractical, especially when somebody needs to be reachable. Leaving everything on means a discount alert can sound just as urgent as something that matters. How do you decide what gets through? Looking for everyday approaches that do not require constant settings adjustments, and examples of where the available controls make it harder than it needs to be.

The difficult part may be keeping one person reachable while muting a busy group. Which controls make that distinction clear enough to use?

Please do not share screenshots with phone numbers, message previews or school details. A description of the notification setup is plenty.

A missed alert and an unread message are not always the same problem. It might help to decide which things need an interruption and which can wait.

Settings are easier to maintain when the labels match what arrives. A category called updates says very little about whether it contains reminders or promotions.
